Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The Department of Computer Science is a major research and teaching department at UNC Chapel Hill with over 40 tenure & teaching track faculty, and several research and adjunct faculty members, who serve 1,500+ undergraduate students and hundreds of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. It is the second oldest free standing computer science department in the United States. Teaching and research activities are currently assisted by nearly 200 graduate students. Twenty-four SHRA positions and eight EHRA-NF positions, including technical and administrative personnel, support the infrastructure of the department. The Department’s driving research ideal is collaboration – as it has been since the founding of the department in 1964. We believe that computer science’s greatest purpose in addition to developing foundational science and systems for computing is in working with other scientists to solve problems in their own disciplines. Therefore, we actively seek opportunities to generate new research with our colleagues and with scientists in other departments across campus, including in science, medicine, and the humanities. Several computer science faculty members have adjunct or joint appointments in other departments, lead large interdisciplinary research groups, and collaborate with colleagues from multiple universities across the Research Triangle, the United States, and across the world. The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC Chapel Hill) established a School of Data Science and Society (SDSS) in 2022. This new school aims to contribute to the burgeoning field of data-oriented modeling and analysis, to solve pressing problems in healthcare, business, transportation, engineering, and other domains, and to study the implications of the usage of data science tools on society at large. The school is developing a core curriculum for training the next generation of data scientists at the undergraduate and graduate level. The BS and BA degrees are being developed collaboratively by CS, SDSS, and several other disciplines. |
Position Summary | The Department of Computer Science and the School of Data Science and Society (SDSS) invite applications at the rank of tenure track Assistant Professor with a starting date of July 01, 2024. We are seeking candidates who embrace excellence in research and teaching, and have a commitment to diversity, mentoring and collaboration. The CS Department is strong in areas such as machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, graphics, augmented and virtual reality, medical imaging, robotics, visualization, robotics, real-time systems, embedded and cyber-physical systems, formal verification, mobile computing, security and computer systems, and bioinformatics. We are specifically seeking candidates from all of these areas, who have a strong connection to data-driven methods in their research and teaching and can build bridges between these areas and data science. S/he will hold a 50-50 joint appointment at CS and at SDSS, with equally split teaching load, will be able to attract and advise graduate students from both units, and will also be conferred tenure from both units. The successful candidate will be expected to direct an independent research program supported by extramural funding, to participate in data science activities and to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels through the CS department and SDSS. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Candidates must possess a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field by the start date of the appointment. Applicants must also have a strong record of research, teaching, and service commensurate with the level of the appointment. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | The ideal candidate for this position would be someone with primary expertise in one of the CS department’s core areas, at the intersection with data science including machine learning, and potential for developing significant collaborations. Consistent with current SDSS themes, candidates with some background in Artificial Intelligence and Health are particularly encouraged to apply. |
