Job Description

Purpose
  • Set high safety standards for the operations performed by the Formulation Engineering Pilot Plant.
  • Leads a Formulation Engineering Pilot Plant team to deliver a broad portfolio of new formulation development projects, capital projects and manufacturing support.
  • Delivers the agreed formulation development program in full compliance with all applicable HSE and quality standards.
  • Manages the daily operation of the NA Formulation Engineering Pilot Plant related to performing formulation scale up for development and processing studies.
  • Ensure the NA Formulation Engineering Pilot Plant equipment and infrastructure are maintained in accordance with the maintenance schedule and the Syngenta Maintenance Policy and Standards.
  • Lead the program for evaluation and introduction of new formulation technology into the NA Formulation Engineering Pilot Plant.
  • Establish the NA Formulation Engineering Pilot Plant strategic long view to define capital needs and future capabilities related to data acquisition and data science to support processing improvements.
  • Define and develop the technology and people capabilities needed in the NA Formulation Engineering Pilot Plant to deliver Syngenta’s current and future requirements.
  • Leads activities performed with the technician team in the NA Formulation Engineering Pilot Plant.
  • Develop the capability, both technology and people, in NA Formulation Engineering to meet the current and future Syngenta's needs.
  • Proactively provide mentoring towards people development.
Accountability 
  • Ensure thorough Risk Assessments are completed for formulation development and process studies activities in the NA Formulation Engineering team.
  • Ensure a collaborative working approach between laboratory and manufacturing sites.
  • Lead pilot plant team in the development and scale-up of manufacturing technologies.
  • Provide pilot plant team expertise to new product development and applies best practice in scale-up and process development to ensure quality and capacity targets are met right first time.
  • Apply the principles of Lean Manufacturing, Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement to drive standardization in manufacturing technologies, methodologies, and protocols across the team.
  • Support the process design activities for capital projects within Finished Product Processing and generate experimental or trial results to underpin the process design.
  • Maintain a clear focus on building and sustaining technical capability within NA Formulation Engineering and coach individuals to close gaps in technical competency.
  • Apply specialist knowledge of manufacturing technology to deliver increases in capacity and product quality through debottlenecking and optimization of formulation manufacturing assets.
  • Co-lead projects/ teams to identify, implement and promote best practice and innovation in production technology in the pilot plant and production sites.
  • Encourage evaluation and trial novel manufacturing equipment and processing techniques, and work with site manufacturing teams to introduce into full-scale manufacture formulations.
  • Ensure that all activities in the NA Formulation Engineering Pilot Plant are documented and in full compliance with the established systems and procedures.


Qualifications
 
  • B.S. Engineering degree with 8+ years of proven experience (adjusted based on further degree). in technical position in formulation processing development or formulation manufacturing. 
  • Strong continuous improvement, process risk assessment expertise and HSE excellence mindset.
  • Experience working in cross-functional organizations, transiting in a dynamic and uncertain environment ensuring effective and focused project delivery (on time and in budget).
  • Proven ability to prioritize activities and manage multiple requests from different stakeholders.  
  • Comprehensive understanding of the end-to-end processes for product development, complex formulation processing scale-up and lifecycle management.
