Position Summary
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine is seeking a vibrant, engaging Vice Chair for Research to lead and grow a research program that will change people's lives. Academic rank will be awarded at a level commensurate with experience. This position will be part of the department's new Senior Leadership Group and will report directly to the Department Chair.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with numerous departments and divisions across the university and region including the joint UNC/NCSU Closed Loop Engineering for Advanced Rehabilitation program, School of Medicine departments (Health Sciences, Orthopedics, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Medicine, Pediatrics, and others), the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, the Sheps Center for Health Services Research, and many more.

World class research support, from the university's Office of the Vice Chancellor of Research, the School of Medicine's Office of Research, the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute, the UNC Health Care System's Office of Practice Quality and Innovation, and other departments, institutes, and centers, create significant opportunities for establishing new research programs and extending the breadth and impact of existing programs.

This position will also provide a leadership opportunity to develop innovative and rigorous research in areas related to people with disabilities, collaborate with departmental researchers in our Program on Integrative Medicine, facilitate the research of faculty and residents, and contribute to the growing translational research agenda at a top academic health care system.

The successful candidate will oversee all departmental research and work to ensure success of our research teams; help develop and implement a strategic research plan; develop and submit funding proposals to appropriate agencies to support research training and infrastructure; mentor faculty, residents, fellows, and students; publish research results in academically rigorous journals; participate in philanthropic development activities related to research; communicate research results on a regular basis with internal and external marketing teams; and launch strategic research partnerships.

The position will assist in the recruitment of faculty, staff, and educators whose background will further contribute to the development of the department's research portfolio.

Significant start-up funding is available to assist in growing research programming within the department.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
The candidate must have at least 3 years of research and leadership experience in an academic institution or medical center and a proven track record of receiving grant funding. Applicants must have a strong research reputation, be ready to assume a leadership role, and possess the skills needed to further develop an already nationally recognized research program.

The candidate must have an MD, DO, DPT, or PhD degree. Experience in one or more of the following areas is required: research related to disciplines in rehabilitation, health disparities research, data science, and/or population health. The candidate must have experience designing and writing research as a Principal Investigator. The candidate should understand all aspects of the administrative components involved in research and be able to inspire others through multiple forms of communication.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
It is preferred that the candidate have experience writing large collaborative and/or successful NIH grants, have experience with neurorehabilitation (spinal cord injury, brain injury or stroke) research, be able to work with both researchers and clinicians, and have experience mining data from electronic health records, administrative claims, and/or other large databases.
