Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (UNCG-McNair) is designed to provide services to 25 promising First-Generation (FG), Low Income (LI) and Underrepresented (UNDERREP) students to assist them in building skills and motivation that will ensure success in education for advanced graduate study and beyond. The purpose of the McNair Program is to prepare eligible participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research. The UNCG-McNair Program will be a part of the Division of Student Success in Academic Affairs and integrated into the campus-at-large. The McNair Scholars Assistant Director coordinates and supervises all individualized services and project events designed to provide graduate school preparation and individual assistance to McNair Scholars and assists the Project Director in implementing designated areas of program administration.

Position Summary
The Assistant Director position provides support services to the McNair Scholars Program through organizing student travel, providing a summer research experience, and serving as an academic advisor to students in the program, as well as facilitating graduate school admissions and publicizing the work of the program. Employee will plan and participate in student events and college tours in NC and outside NC. This travel may require driving students in rental vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Candidates should possess a Master's degree in an academic discipline, a Doctorate is preferred.
  • Academic disciplines preferred include but are not limited to: Natural and Applied Sciences and Social Sciences.
  • Candidates should have at least two years of progressively responsible administrative experience, including budget management, supervision of others, and planning/implementation responsibilities for organizations or projects that are comparable to Federal TRIO programs or Student Services.
  • Should have at least two years of experience working in a direct service capacity (teaching, counseling, academic advising, etc.) to students who are members of groups underrepresented in higher education and/or who are low-income, first-generation college students.
  • Should have excellent organizational skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills: knowledge of research compliance and regulations including those associated with the study of human subjects, animal care and use, and ethical conduct of research.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and organize events, workshops, or seminars and adjust planning in relation to other's actions or events.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based best practices in higher education and have personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting students in the program's specified population; as well as a demonstrated intentional commitment to diversity and inclusion through the vehicle of educational access, opportunity, and best practices for program's student population.
