Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The mission of the Genetics department is to provide basic and applied genetic/genomic research, education, and training at the interface between biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, mathematics, the social sciences, public health, and medicine to have a profound effect on how medicine will be practiced in the future. Our graduate programs train students to be creative, sophisticated research scientists prepared to pursue careers focused on genetics and genomics working in academic science, government, or commercial positions. Students conduct their dissertation research using diverse experimental approaches - from classical genetics to the most modern molecular methods - to address a broad range of contemporary problems in biomedical science. The Department also includes a clinical arm focused on medical genetics, which covers the broad spectrum of clinical genetic research from disease prevention to diagnosis and treatment. This specialty includes evaluation, mutation discovery, counseling and risk assessment through analysis and genetic testing. Locating the clinical group alongside basic scientists facilitates integration of cutting-edge genetic research with patient care. |
Position Summary |
UNC Genetics Department laboratory is seeking a Research Technician to work in a C. elegans genetics research group on the topics of telomere biology and aging. Projects concern integrating concepts in the fields of telomeres, stress and aging with long or short read genome and RNA sequencing data. This position will assist with lab projects to meet grant objectives. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Relevant research technician experience. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Practical experience with research projects or with accomplishing team-oriented goals. Work or educational experience in wet or dry biology research labs, especially in the context of genetics, CRISPR/Cas9-based genome modification, bioinformatics, genome sequence analysis, performing data analysis using R or Python. Practical experience with studying or solving scientific problems would be helpful. Ability to think critically, to learn deeply about a subject, an enjoyment of accomplishing challenging tasks, or an interest in understanding how life works would be helpful. Experience with cell biology, genome modification or biochemical approaches to studying scientific problems would be helpful. |
