Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Gillings School's Department of Nutrition is a global leader in research and training. We are the only nutrition department in the United States situated in both a school of public health and a school of medicine. We engage in innovative work that capitalizes on both these schools' approaches to health, and thus our department has an unusual breadth of scientific and policy approaches. Our faculty expertise spans from cell to society and moves from discovery to delivery. Our faculty and students work throughout North Carolina and reach populations in China, India, Malawi, Spain and the Philippines, to name a few.
Position Summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic faculty member to join our team of instructors to teach required and elective foundational nutrition courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. These interdisciplinary courses cover and assess foundational nutrition knowledge and competencies. Courses may also include advanced graduate seminars, electives, seminar-style courses to help students with thesis preparation, and supervising independent student research for credit.
The Department of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a fixed term faculty position at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor. Duties will include teaching in-person residential courses. Classes to be taught may include NUTR 295 Independent Study, NUTR 470 and NUTR 770, Clinical Trials and Interventions; NUTR 722 BSPH Honors thesis, NUTR 765 Nutrition Epidemiology; NUTR 705 Human Nutrition, and NUTR 812 Cell to Society. Teaching in the online MPH Nutrition concentration may also be required. Other expected duties will include service to the department in the form of serving on relevant committees, student mentorship, and contributing to curriculum design strategy and innovation across programs. Participation in research activities is possible but not expected or required and depends on grant funding and annual teaching commitments.
The ideal candidate will be able to integrate current nutrition research into the classroom, reflecting interdisciplinary knowledge of nutrition metabolism, public health nutrition and nutrition epidemiology, dietetics, health behavior, and public policy.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Candidates for this position must have a doctorate degree (Ph.D., Dr.P.H., M.D., EdD or equivalent) in a field compatible with teaching nutrition.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience with residential and on-line teaching is desirable. Registered Dietitian preferred.
