Position Summary
This position will serve as a Research Associate (EHRA) within the Tobacco Prevention and Evaluation Program (TPEP) at the Department of Family Medicine. This position will work directly with the Director for TPEP, and across a team of TPEP researchers on various contracts from the NC Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS). For these contracts TPEP is working to 1) Educate the public and decision-makers on the harms of tobacco and secondhand smoke as well as effective policies and programs to reduce tobacco's harm, 2) Collect and evaluate crucial data about the extent to which e-cigarettes and other emerging tobacco products have affected youth and young adults across North Carolina, and 3) Evaluate the North Carolina Quitline.

The Research Associate/Project Manager will be primarily responsible for leading the North Carolinians for a Tobacco-free Generation (NCTFG) contract. Duties related to leading the NCTFG project include monitoring budgets and attending budget meetings, coordinating and leading project team meetings with stakeholders (e.g., NC DHHS), providing project updates, preparing, and sharing data visualizations, and conducting outreach to external organizations and stakeholders both in-person (e.g., state conferences) and online (e.g., via email, phone). Position responsibilities also include conducting interviews with local experts and advocates for tobacco prevention and control in NC, creating cobranded social media content with other agencies and organizations, and hosting a podcast to reach and engage people in NC. The person in this position will develop an in-depth content strategy plan to guide messaging and will lead development of evidence-based content to be posted on NCTFG's social media platforms (i.e., Facebook, X, Instagram, and LinkedIn). This role will work closely with the NC DHHS Director of Public Education and Communication to align content with NC DHHS goals.

The responsibilities for this position substantially intersection with the NC Youth E-cigarette Prevention and the NC Quitline Evaluation contracts. Duties associated with the corresponding contracts include collecting data (i.e., conducting focus groups/interviews, content analysis) and coordinating data collection (i.e., submitting institutional review board (IRB) study applications, recruiting research participants), implementing study methodologies, conducting qualitative data analysis, interpreting results, and disseminating findings. The person in this position will disseminate research and evaluation findings by developing content for the NCTFG social media post, writing reports for NC DHHS, and assisting with peer-reviewed academic publications and presentations to contribute to science. They will formulate qualitative methods, use qualitative software for data analysis, and suggest options for improving quality, identify potential problems, recommend and implement solutions, and collaborate in the development of new techniques (if necessary). When necessary, they will communicate with one or more TPEP project managers in resolving issues and will be responsible for communicating resolution to all interested parties external (NC DHHS) and internal to UNC. They will manage, gather, analyze, review, and report information for the evaluation contracts. This position will be responsible for working with funders, vendors, and TPEP team researchers to develop and negotiate contract deliverables, ensuring TPEP is meeting or exceeding timelines as appropriate, and working with the University to ensure that all research and evaluation activities conducted for the contracts are in compliance with the university and IRB.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
This role will collaborate across multiple public health projects and must have experience and training in tobacco control and health communication. This position requires strong public health communication and evaluation skills, such as developing content strategy plans, creating data collection instruments, analyzing evaluation data, and writing reports. This position requires capacity to independently manage multiple aspects associated with large evaluations. Demonstrated proficiency and sufficient experience with qualitative data collection and analysis are required. Strong project management, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills. The ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities and activities, ability to handle multiple ongoing activities with attention to detail, and ability to prioritize activities accordingly to ensure that work gets done in a timely manner.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
A Master's degree in public health or a similar field is preferred and preference will be given to candidates with experience with social media evaluations, podcast development, and qualitative data collection and analysis.
